Gratitude for the Journey
The Path that Leads to Me
I gave a presentation yesterday on the power and energy in our words. This is an important subject to me because I believe that words are very precious things and should be used with care.
One of the reasons why I discovered the power in words was because of a time when I hated the world and everything about my life – all because of my job. Prior to that horrible job, I had worked on a project with some of the most amazing and talented folks. We all became close, worked hard, accomplished a lot and had fun along the way. It was a great learning experience, too. Soon after this project was completed, I moved on to another team and another project. Talk about night and day! This new team didn’t want anything to do with one another, did not want to work together, there was backbiting, duplication of work due of lack of communication, and a permeating negativity throughout the place.
I made it my mission to bring the group together for the good of the project. What this translated to, was me jumping in with both feet, over my head, deep into the mire! With little training, no backup support and only a feeling of purpose, I proceeded to do everything wrong. My frustration gave way to disappointment and soon the toxic atmosphere began to affect me. I became negative and gossipy just like the others. Not a pretty picture of myself and certainly not what I wanted to become or do.
The Path Takes a Turn
The long drive into work was a torturous trip for me. Dreading the day ahead, I would often break down into tears. One particularly difficult morning found me in my parking space attempting to get myself together. I thought that I just couldn’t do this any more! Then I looked over and saw it. I saw a sign that said: “Remember Who You Wanted to Be.“ It stopped me in my tracks. That is the exact moment that I knew I had to begin doing work that was right for me and get out of that place!
After my presentation yesterday, one of the participants came up and asked: “If you knew what you know now, would you have done things differently?” Interesting question! What would I do differently? A resounding no! I have often thought that I would never change a thing from my past. If I had to go back in time, I would definitely re-live my life the same way. After all, if if were not for all these experiences, I would not be the person I am now. That’s an important bit of knowledge.
I have been groomed for many years to be the person who I am today. I am grateful for this journey and I wouldn’t change a thing!
