The Right Career Can Influence Your World!
Is what you do for a living truly a reflection of you?
While standing in the grocery line the other day, the woman in front of me asked the cashier how she could stand just ringing groceries all day. The cashier looked at the rude questioner, smiled and said: “I like to meet real people. The folks buying groceries for their families are doing what is real in their life. There are no pretenses here. I’m retired and work to fill my time. Everyone needs groceries and so, in a way, everyone needs me.” What a great response! The customer was taken aback for a moment, but then warmed and genuinely wished the cashier a good day.
As a career transitions coach, this cashier gave me much to reflect upon during the day. This is the how I love to see my clients feel about their work! That cashier knew exactly what she wanted out of her work and secured a position to fulfill her desires. She did not desire a high profile career, she wanted to fill her time and meet people in a place that was convient to her. This is what performing your true work is all about! It is about loving the work you do because it fulfills your own unique requirements.
Sometimes my clients have put themselves under pressure to find a career that not only fulfills them, but must bring about world peace in the process! I can tell you unequivocally that doing work that is right for you, any work, will do it’s part to bring about world peace. How so? When you are happy during the many hours you will spend at work each year, you will be a better person overall.
That’s right, you will be happier when you go pump gas and will smile at others. You will be more understanding to someone in need when you are fulfilled in your own work. You will be more loving, giving, kinder, productive and sharing. This will show up in all aspects of your life and have a positive effect upon others.
You can indeed be an ambassedor of world peace, not specifically because of the work you do, but because of who you become when you do the right work for you. So the emphasis is not on some grandiose career, but on performing your part to be fulfilled in a varied and complex world.
